In 2015, Ledyard Farms embarked on a new effort to grow hops on a small portion of its acreage.  Hops, which are a primary flavoring and bittering ingredient in beer, are ideally suited for the climate/soil near Cayuga Lake. Our location also benefits from an adjacent spring fed pond which will provide water necessary for irrigation for the thirsty plants.  In the late 19thCentury, New York State was the largest grower of Hops in the US, before a mildew outbreak and prohibition dramatically reduced the acreage as the industry shifted to the Northwest. Today New York State has about 250 acres devoted to growing Hops with a large portion of that acreage located near Ledyard Farms in central New York.
